Cake

Bake your favorite 9 x 13 in cake.  Grease and flour you pan well or grease and put a piece of waxed paper inside the pan.  Cool for 10 minutes in the pan then loosen sides.  Invert on a cake rack and cool completely.    Place cake in the freezer for a few hours to make cutting and frosting easier.  Cut a pattern of a dog bone out of waxed paper and place on top of the cake.  Cut into the shape of a bone.  Frost with chocolate frosting.

Activities

Print the dog house at pbs.org and let the kids put them together.  There are also some coloring pages throughout the web site.  When you see a box of crayons, click on them.  For other ideas go to Scholastic.com.

Hats

Dog ears out of red felt

Cut one strip of red felt for each child 2 inch wide and 24 inch long for headbands.    With tracing paper make a pattern from thin poster board.  Cut 2 ears out of red felt for each child.  Fold a pleat in each ear and staple two to the inside of each headband.  The ears should drop over the top of the band.  Wrap the felt band around head and staple two ends together in the back.  Should be a 3 to 4 inch overlap.

Ears are 6 inches across and 7 inches long.  Pleats are 2 inches in from each side. 

Decorations

Lots of red balloons.  Hang them up in bunches with curly ribbon tied to them.  You can purchase Clifford cups, tablecloth, plates, napkins and other decorations though your local party store or to make it easy on yourself you can order through birthdayexpress.com.
